The Agroecology Study Group "Raiz do Campo" is dedicated to fostering Extension, Research, and Education activities aimed at strengthening agroecological practices within the Central Association of Organic Producers of Southern Minas (Orgânicos Sul de Minas). This initiative spans over 30 municipalities and directly supports approximately 200 family farmers. Its work encompasses the preservation of heirloom and organic seeds, the implementation and management of agroforestry systems, and environmental education initiatives.
To achieve its goals, the group relies on a dedicated Agroecology Sector located on a 2.4-hectare plot at the Fazenda-Escola of IFSULDEMINAS - Campus Inconfidentes, in Inconfidentes, Minas Gerais. This space serves as a living laboratory, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications. It enables farmers, students, and researchers to collaborate on sustainable agricultural practices, from seed conservation to innovative agroforestry techniques, promoting biodiversity and resilience in farming systems.
Beyond its technical contributions, "Raiz do Campo" actively engages with local communities, fostering knowledge exchange and empowering small-scale farmers. Through workshops, field days, and participatory projects, it bridges traditional knowledge with scientific research, creating a dynamic network of agroecological practitioners. This collaborative approach not only enhances food security but also reinforces the socio-environmental sustainability of rural areas, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier and more equitable ecosystem.
