The Horta Comunitária da 416N is an urban agroecology initiative that strengthens community life, environmental education, and healthy eating. Created by residents of SQN 416 and organized by the 416 North Collective, the project promotes sustainable food production free from pesticides while fostering social connections. By growing their own food, participants learn about ecological cycles, engage in outdoor activities, and create a shared green space that benefits the entire neighborhood. The goal is to expand the initiative so that each residential block has its own medicinal and culinary herb gardens, encouraging exchange and interaction among residents.
The 416 North Collective is a group of local residents committed to sustainability and urban agriculture. More than 150 neighbors have supported the initiative, and around 30 actively participate, including agronomists, pharmacists, designers, educators, and public servants. The garden is part of a broader movement advocating for the regulation of urban agriculture in Brasília and is connected to other community gardening initiatives. The space remains public and accessible to all, functioning as a place for hands-on learning, food production, and environmental awareness.
Beyond growing food, the community garden improves urban spaces by increasing biodiversity, reducing abandoned areas, and enhancing safety. Following agroecological principles, it integrates diverse plant species to enrich the soil naturally and create a balanced ecosystem. The initiative aligns with global trends in urban farming, seen in cities like Havana and Amsterdam, where community gardens contribute to food security and urban resilience. By reclaiming public spaces for sustainable use, the 416N garden demonstrates that agroecology can transform cities, fostering stronger communities and a healthier environment.
