Milkweed Tussock Tubers

Milkweed Tussock Tubers

United States of America

Brève description de votre localisation et de vos pratiques

Milkweed Tussock Tubers is located in the St Lawrence River Valley of Northern New York. We are a small-scale spud and root operation begun in 2016, and St Lawrence County's only regenerative potato farm growing both table and self-tested seedstock. MTT promotes rare and unusual varieties while rejuvenating the ecosystems and communities in which we are based.
We are driven by a passion for restoration ecology - how can we reunite the human and non-human worlds to restore and recognize abundance for all? Through agriculture, we re-popularize unusual and endangered root crops, rejuvenate native habitats and populations and teach others to do the same. Our love of hands-on work has led us to ox training, and we are learning how to transition from fossil-fuels to animal power.

Our Practices Include:
Building soil through no-till practices, animal-crop rotation, heavy mulching and composting.
Planting native flowers, shrubs and trees amongst crops and along hedgerows to increase diversity and resilience.
Encouraging pollinators through the creation and installation of appropriate habitats and houses.
Encouraging trophic health through the installation of bird houses, bat houses and snake habitat.
Reducing water usage and waste with thick mulch and rainwater collection systems.
Transitioning away from fossil fuel-run tractors by training three oxen to a yoke.
Sequestering carbon by increasing plant life and soil health through the aforementioned regenerative techniques.
Timing our practices to ensure we do not negatively impact the overall health of specific species, such as haying late to protect field birds.
Creating our packaging materials out of upcycled products.
Educating others on how to encourage, connect with, rejoice with and rejuvenate the ecosystems where they live.
We welcome visitors, volunteers and students and are also happy to speak at your next event!!
