The Núcleo de Agroecologia NHEENGATU ESALQ/USP was established in 2010 in partnership with National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ), aiming to unite research and extension groups working within the field of agroecology. By fostering collaboration among various initiatives—including agroforestry systems (SAFs), organic production, rural and university extension, marketing, and composting—it has become a vital hub for advancing the agroecological agenda within the university and beyond. The Nucleus also engages directly with external communities, such as the Milton Santos Agrarian Reform Settlement in Americana and family farmers in São Pedro.
As an initiative of the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) at the University of São Paulo (USP), the NHEENGATU Nucleus is dedicated to promoting sustainable and ecological agriculture. Its activities are rooted in an interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific research with practical applications to address the challenges faced by farmers and rural communities.
The Nucleus organizes a wide range of events and programs, including open classes, fairs, collective workdays, and immersive field experiences. These initiatives provide both theoretical and practical training in agroecology for students, researchers, and farmers, encouraging the development of skills and knowledge that contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
Furthermore, the NHEENGATU Nucleus strengthens the relationship between academia and rural communities through hands-on internships and partnerships. Notable examples include experiential learning opportunities in settlements like Milton Santos, where participants engage in transformative exchanges that enrich both students and the local community. These efforts are pivotal in building a shared foundation of knowledge and practices that promote ecological and social sustainability.
