The "Sistemas Agroflorestais com ênfase em Fruticultura com Agricultores Familiares em Caroebe" project, initiated by EMBRAPA, aims to implement agroforestry systems (SAFs) focusing on fruit cultivation among family farmers in Caroebe, Roraima. This initiative encourages the integration of fruit trees with annual crops and forest species, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and rehabilitating degraded lands. The goal is to diversify production, improve income stability, and reduce environmental impacts such as deforestation, pesticide use, and the burning of areas. The project represents a key strategy for transitioning towards more sustainable farming systems in the region.
Through the adoption of SAFs, farmers in Caroebe have increased their income by cultivating a wide variety of products, including bananas, cassava, açaí, oranges, and Brazil nuts. These systems provide seasonal production, ensuring a stable income throughout the year. Additionally, SAFs contribute to environmental conservation by helping to restore areas affected by deforestation and uncontrolled burning. The project has proven to be successful, offering local farmers viable alternatives to traditional farming practices while improving both their economic and environmental resilience.
