Permaculture collective garden in Brussels Haren

FruityHaren is a vibrant citizen-led collective garden in Brussels-Haren, created as a shared space where community, ecology, and food production come together. More than a garden, it is a living laboratory where residents reconnect with the land, steward biodiversity, and cultivate a healthier relationship with their environment. The project embodies the spirit of civic participation, transforming a shared dream into a thriving ecological space.

Guided by the principles of permaculture and agroecology, the garden is designed to work with nature rather than against it. Edible plants, medicinal herbs, small fruit trees, and multifunctional species are combined in resilient polycultures that mimic natural ecosystems. Each element plays a role: enriching the soil, feeding pollinators, attracting beneficial insects, or providing food and well-being for the community. This approach promotes biodiversity, reduces external inputs, and restores ecological balance in an urban context.

Located in the northern part of the Brussels municipality, the garden sits on former market-gardening land near the heart of the village of Haren — a peaceful, pastoral area interwoven with footpaths, vegetable plots, and grazing fields. Despite increasing urban pressure and rapid social changes, FruityHaren stands as a green refuge and a symbol of resilience. It is a place where nature is regenerated, community bonds are strengthened, and ecological knowledge is shared across generations.
