Kasamatsu Farms, founded by Byron and Kaori Nagy in 2012, is a family-run organic farm in the mountains outside Tokyo that integrates regenerative agriculture and permaculture principles into its operations. The farm emerged from their decision to leave corporate city jobs and pursue a more sustainable and nature-connected lifestyle after the 2011 earthquake. They cultivate heirloom vegetables using agroecological methods that enhance soil fertility, promote biodiversity, and minimize environmental impact. Their off-grid facility allows them to process and package produce with minimal waste, avoiding single-use plastics whenever possible.

At the heart of their farming philosophy is a closed-loop system where chickens contribute to soil health by recycling organic matter, enriching compost, and providing farm-range eggs. This aligns with permaculture’s principle of working with nature to create self-sustaining ecosystems. They also run Yokomura Eco-lodge, a renovated silk production farmhouse, offering an immersive experience in sustainable living. Through these efforts, they not only produce high-quality food but also foster awareness about the importance of regenerative agriculture in building resilient local food systems.
