Short description of your place and practices

The UWC-USA Agroecology Research Center (ARC) embodies a mission rooted in promoting “a sustainable future” by inspiring students to actively engage with the stewardship of the earth and its natural resources. Through experiential learning, the ARC challenges students to cultivate a deeper understanding of sustainability while developing practical skills that benefit both their local environment and global communities. The activities, clubs, and service opportunities offered by the center reflect this mission and can be grouped into three broad categories:

The Agroecology Research Center: This is where students collaborate with faculty to grow fresh, organic food for the school’s Dining Hall. Through hands-on agricultural work, students gain an understanding of sustainable food systems, soil health, and regenerative farming practices. The farm serves as a living laboratory, fostering inquiry and innovation while emphasizing the interconnectedness of ecological, social, and economic sustainability.

Personal Sustainability: Students are encouraged to adopt habits that contribute to healthy lifestyles and resilient communities. This includes education on nutrition, mindfulness, and self-care practices, as well as workshops on reducing waste and consuming resources responsibly. By focusing on individual well-being as a cornerstone of sustainable living, the ARC equips students with the tools to lead by example in their own lives and communities.

Campus Service Initiatives: Sustainability extends beyond the farm and the self to encompass the broader school environment. As part of UWC-USA’s campus service program, students engage in activities such as composting, maintaining pollinator gardens, recycling, and conserving energy. These initiatives not only support the school’s operational sustainability but also foster a collective sense of responsibility and teamwork among students.

The ARC is more than just a farm; it is an outdoor classroom and a hub for experiential learning, where youth from around the world can acquire knowledge and skills essential for addressing the environmental challenges of their generation. By engaging with the land and the processes of food production, students develop a sense of place and connection to the earth that transcends traditional classroom learning. The center also integrates lessons in agroecology with broader topics like climate change, food justice, and biodiversity conservation, helping students to think critically about global systems and their role in creating a sustainable future.

In addition to its educational role, the ARC serves as a vibrant community space that nurtures dialogue and collaboration. Students and faculty work side-by-side to explore innovative solutions to pressing environmental issues, fostering a spirit of inquiry and action. This collaboration reflects the core values of UWC-USA, encouraging students to take what they learn on campus and apply it to meaningful change in their home countries and beyond.

Through its mission and programs, the UWC-USA Agroecology Research Center exemplifies the belief that sustainability is not just a practice but a mindset. By equipping students with the tools to think critically, act responsibly, and inspire others, the ARC is preparing a new generation of leaders committed to building a more equitable and sustainable world.

What is your dream for the future of your farm and/or your location in general?
