Sitio Bagagem: A Beacon of Agroecology and Sustainable Development
The Sitio Bagagem is part of the Advanced Campus for Family Agriculture, established by the Instituto Educacional Tiradentes (IET), an institution with a significant legacy in education in Goiás since its founding in 1982.
The IET has always championed education as a tool for empowerment, offering technical and professional training to young people and adults. With over 22,000 graduates, the institute has played a pivotal role in qualifying the local workforce and driving regional development.
In 2016, the IET took a bold step toward promoting sustainable rural development by creating the Advanced Campus for Family Agriculture – Sitio Bagagem. Located in the Muquém region, a historic quilombo in Niquelândia, this campus is nestled between the Chapada dos Veadeiros and Lago Serra da Mesa, along the banks of the Rio Bagagem, one of the lake's largest tributaries.
This agricultural school launched its first program in 2017, offering a Technical Course in Agricultural Science in partnership with the local government. Completely free of charge, the program benefits over 60 children of family farmers annually.
Agroecology as the Foundation
The curriculum at Sitio Bagagem is rooted in agroecological principles, designed to enhance family farming systems while promoting sustainable practices. The goal is to empower farming families with the knowledge and resources to implement agroecological food production systems, ensuring food sovereignty and generating income through the sale of organic produce. Students are encouraged to participate in government programs such as the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE), as well as engage in direct marketing channels to reach consumers.
A Self-Sustaining Model
Currently, the campus supplies more than eight supermarkets with produce from its agroforestry systems, all cultivated by the students themselves. These students not only gain hands-on experience but also receive a scholarship and a salary for their contributions, working 30 hours per week while completing their technical studies.
Sitio Bagagem stands as a powerful example of how education, agroecology, and sustainable development can converge to transform communities, nurture future generations of farmers, and protect the environment. By fostering a model that integrates production, education, and social responsibility, Sitio Bagagem is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

The primary goal of Sitio Bagagem is to serve as a living laboratory for agroecology and family farming, equipping students and their families with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to establish sustainable agricultural systems. By fostering food sovereignty, the institution aims to empower small-scale farmers to produce healthy, organic food while generating income through fair and accessible markets. The campus is committed to creating a replicable model of sustainable rural development that prioritizes education, community resilience, and environmental stewardship.
Looking ahead, Sitio Bagagem envisions becoming a national and international reference in agroecological education and sustainable food systems. The dream is to expand its reach, inspiring more families, communities, and regions to adopt sustainable practices. Sitio Bagagem aspires to strengthen its network of partnerships, enhance its agroforestry systems, and create new programs that address climate resilience and biodiversity conservation. Ultimately, the dream is to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious leaders who will champion agroecology as a solution to global challenges in food security and sustainability.
