Brazil

Breve descrição do seu lugar e práticas

The system is currently under development at the municipal nursery of São Lourenço do Sul and is coordinated by Professor Marcio de Medeiros Gonçalves from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), São Lourenço do Sul campus.

This Didactic Agroforestry System initiative serves as a living laboratory, promoting experiential learning grounded in agroecological principles. By integrating sustainable farming practices with ecological restoration, the project provides students, local farmers, and community members with hands-on opportunities to explore the interconnectedness of agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship. Participants engage in activities such as planting native species, managing soil health, and designing diversified agroforestry systems, fostering a deep understanding of sustainable land use practices.

Beyond its educational purpose, the project addresses pressing environmental and social challenges. It contributes to the restoration of degraded lands, enhances food security through diversified production, and builds resilience to climate change. Additionally, the initiative strengthens community ties by encouraging collaborative work and knowledge exchange among participants from diverse backgrounds, including academia, local communities, and public institutions.

As a pioneering model of agroecological education, the system at São Lourenço do Sul exemplifies the transformative potential of integrating education with sustainability. By equipping participants with practical skills and ecological awareness, it not only prepares future leaders in sustainable agriculture but also inspires collective action toward a more equitable and resilient food system.

The primary goals and objectives of the Didactic Agroforestry System initiative are to promote agroecological principles through hands-on learning, restore degraded ecosystems, and enhance local food security. The project aims to serve as a practical training ground for students, farmers, and community members, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to implement sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, it seeks to foster biodiversity, improve soil health, and strengthen community bonds by encouraging collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. Ultimately, the initiative aspires to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system while inspiring broader adoption of agroecological practices in the region and beyond.
