Drylands Permaculture Nursery

Dryland Permaculture focuses on applying ecological and regenerative design strategies in regions where annual evaporation exceeds annual rainfall. In these landscapes, rainfall is unpredictable—often arriving in short seasonal bursts followed by long periods of drought. As a result, water scarcity, limited biological activity, and fragile soils low in organic matter dominate the natural conditions. Without thoughtful intervention, these soils are highly susceptible to salinisation, erosion, and severe degradation.

Drylands currently make up more than one-third of the Earth’s land surface and are home to over two billion people, many of whom live in developing regions. As populations continue to grow and communities strive to improve their livelihoods, drylands face increasing environmental pressures. Among the most urgent challenges are the overextraction of limited water sources, declining biodiversity, expanding desertification, and the loss of fertile ground needed for food, shelter, and cultural resilience.

Through hands-on experience in Africa, the Middle East, and Australia, we have seen how Permaculture can restore balance to these vulnerable environments. By harvesting water, building soil fertility, creating resilient plant guilds, and designing with nature rather than against it, degraded dryland ecosystems can return to productivity and abundance. Many of these regenerative techniques are demonstrated on our semi-rural site in Geraldton, Western Australia, where our drylands permaculture enterprise offers workshops, guided tours, plant and seed sales, and practical learning opportunities. Our mission is to share knowledge, inspire hope, and contribute to a thriving future for dryland communities around the world.
