Ipanema Agroecologia

Brazil

Descripción breve del lugar y las prácticas

Ipanema Agroecology operates through specific and interconnected initiatives, creating a holistic system rooted in sustainability and community. Our work encompasses various areas: a charming eco-lodge (Cerrado Lodge, featuring 10 chalets available for short-term rental), diverse organic and agroforestry plantings (vegetable gardens, three agroforests, orchards, and a nursery), sustainable animal husbandry (chickens and cows), and artisanal processing (a small-scale lab for distillation, fermentation, cheesemaking, dehydration, and grinding). Additionally, we run the Feirinha do Mirante, a monthly market offering our own products and those of local partners, fostering a vibrant regional exchange.

What sets us apart is our commitment to environmentally conscious practices. All plantings are organic or agroforestry-based, and we conduct sustainable harvesting in the surrounding Cerrado biome. Our animal husbandry prioritizes respect for animal welfare and aligns with ecological principles. Water stewardship is central to our mission, from sustainable cleaning and hygiene products (all made on-site) to careful water treatment processes. Permaculture principles underpin our operations, interconnecting systems like using manure from livestock for fertilizing crops or processing milk into artisanal cheeses and yogurt.

In our artisanal lab, we craft hygiene and personal care products using plants grown here or responsibly collected from the Cerrado. These items are shared with the community through Feirinha do Mirante, held on the first Sunday of every month. This market serves as a hub for distributing our surplus products and showcasing the organic, handcrafted goods of local partners. We also host an internship program, currently engaging a trainee in both our processing activities and market logistics, fully adhering to internship regulations. Beyond our property, we participate in external fairs aligned with our values, sharing a glimpse of life in Serrinha do Paranoá while promoting regional producers.

To further enrich the community experience, we offer unique opportunities such as a “harvest with the client” initiative, where market visitors can handpick their produce directly from our gardens and orchards. Guided trails provide immersive explorations of our agroforestry systems, water management strategies, and processing facilities. We also support cycling and hiking groups by providing refreshments during our Sunday markets. For smaller groups (up to six people, considering pandemic precautions), we arrange weekday visits featuring guided tours and meals crafted from our local ingredients.

Detalles del sistema agrícola

Our goal is to continuously expand our impact by fostering stronger community ties, empowering local producers, and promoting agroecological education. Through initiatives like Feirinha do Mirante, guided trails, and workshops, we strive to create spaces for learning, collaboration, and exchange. We are committed to scaling our sustainable practices while staying true to permaculture principles, ensuring that every aspect of our operation—from food systems to water management—serves as a catalyst for a healthier planet. Above all, we aim to inspire others to dream of a future where humanity and nature coexist in balance, and to take steps toward making that vision a reality.

¿Qué sueñas para el futuro de la granja o del lugar en general?

At Ipanema Agroecology, our dream is to become a model of sustainable living and integrated agroecological practices, inspiring individuals and communities to reconnect with nature and adopt regenerative approaches to food production, consumption, and stewardship. We envision our Cerrado Lodge as a sanctuary where visitors can experience the harmony between human activities and the environment, while also learning from our practices and sharing in the abundance of the land. By preserving and regenerating the Cerrado biome, we aim to leave a legacy of ecological balance, where biodiversity flourishes alongside productive systems.
