Horta Comunitária do Guará

Brazil

Descripción breve del lugar y las prácticas

The Horta Comunitária do Guará, located in QE 38 of Guará II, is a vibrant example of urban agriculture based on agroecological and permaculture principles. Since its creation in 2017, the space has been transformed from a degraded area into a productive and sustainable ecosystem, where the community comes together to grow pesticide-free food, strengthen social bonds, and promote environmental education. Soil management follows regenerative practices such as composting, mulching, and intercropping, ensuring natural soil fertility and reducing dependence on external inputs.

The garden operates collaboratively, relying on the active participation of volunteers who apply permaculture techniques to optimize production and biodiversity. These practices include the use of natural biofertilizers, agroforestry systems, and rainwater harvesting, ensuring sustainable and resilient land management in the face of climate change. Additionally, community integration strengthens the solidarity economy, allowing the harvested food to be shared among participants, promoting food security and reinforcing local sovereignty.

More than just a cultivation space, the Horta Comunitária do Guará is a living laboratory for learning, hosting workshops on composting, ecological soil management, and diverse planting techniques. Through educational events and gatherings, the garden encourages the dissemination of knowledge on agroecology and permaculture, inspiring other urban agriculture initiatives. Under the leadership of the Instituto Arapoti and its president, Dahiana Ribeiro, the project has become a reference in sustainability, demonstrating in practice how small collective actions can have a significant impact on regenerating urban ecosystems and building more resilient communities.

¿Qué sueñas para el futuro de la granja o del lugar en general?

The Horta Comunitária do Guará envisions a future where urban agriculture is not just an alternative, but a fundamental pillar of sustainable cities, fostering food sovereignty, environmental regeneration, and community resilience. Their dream is to expand the project, inspiring and supporting the creation of new agroecological gardens in other neighborhoods, transforming neglected urban spaces into thriving ecosystems of biodiversity and collective care. They aspire to deepen educational initiatives, reaching more people with hands-on learning about permaculture, composting, and ecological land stewardship. By strengthening local networks and advocating for public policies that support urban agroecology, the Horta Comunitária do Guará seeks to build a greener, healthier, and more self-sufficient society, where communities take an active role in cultivating not only food but also a more just and regenerative future.
