El Rochen

El Rochen

Tunisia

Short description of your place and practices

El Rochen cultivates Aloe Vera, prickly pear, and seasonal crops, integrates animals for composting, and transforms local plants into natural, handcrafted products.

Beyond farming, El Rochen is a space for education and empowerment, hosting workshops and organizing the annual Agroecology Festival. It serves as a model for climate resilience, community engagement, and women-led innovation in the green economy.

The farm also offers a table d’hôte experience, where visitors can enjoy fresh, locally sourced meals in a natural setting. It welcomes students and researchers interested in learning agroecological techniques adapted to semi-arid environments. In addition, El Rochen provides an eco-camping area, allowing guests to stay close to nature and experience life on an agroecological farm.

Details of the farming system

The main purpose of El Rochen is to regenerate the land and empower the community through agroecology. We aim to produce healthy food, create local jobs, promote sustainable practices, and educate others—especially women and youth—about ecological farming and climate resilience.

What is your dream for the future of your farm and/or your location in general?

My dream is to turn El Rochen into a reference center for agroecology in North Africa — a place where people can learn, grow, and reconnect with the land. I want to expand the farm’s impact by offering training programs, scaling up production, and exporting our natural products through the brand Mon Aléo.

More broadly, I hope to see my region of Zarzis become a living example of resilience, where local communities, especially women and youth, are empowered through green innovation, sustainable tourism, and a deep respect for nature.
