Short description of your place and practices

Organic vegan CSA farm and tea garden, using agroecology and permaculture priciples. apr-oct opened on wednesday and saturday.

De Ommuurde Tuin is located in the historic vegetable garden of King William III. It has been Esther Kuiler's organic garden since 1999. After her studies at Wageningen University, she wanted to shape her knowledge about forest ecology, organic agriculture and soil science into a company to show that agriculture is possible in collaboration with nature.

“Better to show how it can be done than to tell you how it should be done.” We try out different varieties every year and grow more than 450 varieties of edible crops on 1 hectare: vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers of historical, modern and wild species. Old varieties are also grown for the Heritage Seed Network in collaboration with seed bank CGN. In addition to biodiversity, a lot of attention is paid to the soil in the garden, using as many permanent beds as possible, the use of compost and bokashi, a wide crop rotation and sufficient green manures. We do not use animal manure and the garden is therefore so-called 'vegan agriculture'.

This means we are not dependent on (organic) livestock farming. Here too we mirror nature, there are very few 'large' animals per hectare. Many permaculture principles are used in the garden, which means there is great diversity in the plants and we have our own food forest, a mix of edible shrubs and trees in the wide hedgerows on the east and south sides of the garden.

The Ommuurde Tuin is affiliated with many different partnerships such as VELT, the Bio-Gardeners, Toekomstboeren, the CSA network, the BioVegan Network and the BD association, which have recently been joined in the Federation of Agro-ecological Farmers.
